Entering the Portland Graffiti Scene
by Hannah Adams
Abstract
Portland, Oregon is thought to be a progressive city in the United States, however, Portland shows to have one of the more strict zero tolerance policies for graffiti and street art. The 'Broken Windows Theory' suggests that places where graffiti occurs encourages other crimes as well found in economically poor areas. This is not necessarily true, and has been shown to have no correlation with crime. The purpose of this research is to better understand the implications of Portland's zero tolerance laws of graffiti space and place. Points and photos were collected and analyzed with census data. No correlation was found with income of households however zoning areas showed that graffiti was more common in mixed residential and commercial areas.
