Oregon in Your Eyes: Oregon is a beautiful place with a huge variety of landscapes. It is full of people who are just as diverse as the land and are passionate about everything they do.
How this course influenced you as a Geographer: Studying Geography I have learned about a lot of different places and how the people live there, but you can only learn so much in a classroom. This experience has given me a first-hand look at how people have adapted to and are thriving in a variety of environments. The world is a big place full of people and adventure, this class has given me an opportunity to experience both of these in Oregon.

Oregon in Your Eyes: Oregon is a lush and mountainous place that has vastly different physical landscapes no matter where you go. It is a place of opportunity and a place where pride in ones state is very important.
How this course influenced you as a Geographer: Taking this course helped me grow as a geographer, and gave me first hand experience on different land forms, different people, and different culture. Geography isn't about sitting behind a desk and plugging away at a computer all the time, Sometimes you have to get out and experience the world yourself.

Favorite Moment: Cliff jumping into Crater Lake and watching the sunset on the beach in Manzanita
Favorite Place: Manzanita, Oregon
Favorite Meal: Mi Mero Mole in Portland
Oregon in Your Eyes: Oregon is a unique place that contains a diverse landscape from the marine coast, Mountain ranges, lush valleys, and dry deserts.Oregon's people have been influenced by this landscape and has shown great care and interest in preserving these landscapes and in turn the people have influenced the land and its preservation and development.
How this course influenced you as a geographer: This course has really challenged me both on the trip and in the classroom. On the trip there was no text book to direct me I had to look at Oregon as a geographer in real time. Making observations, asking questions, and thinking critically and spatially. Overall, I think I have grown as a geographer and hope that I have more opportunities to exercise these skills and apply them to future classes as well as to the rest of my life in how I interpret the world around me.

Favorite Meal: Family dinner of tacos in Manzanita hotel
Oregon in Your Eyes: Oregon is a state full of diverse landscapes. One would think that the large amount of landscape diversity, from the dry east, to the Cascades, to the lush Willamette Valley, to the coast would create a feeling of isolation and separation among Oregonians. However, I realized the great pride everyone seemed to have in the idea of being an Oregonian. This idea of being an Oregonian and state pride is shown in many ways different ways, ranging from the Oregon bumper stickers with a green heart in them to the fierce love of Oregon-brewed craft beers.
How this course influenced you as a Geographer: This course opened my eyes and let me see the deep connections between everything. Geography to me is viewing interconnectedness in a spatial context. This trip helped me see the real life connections between the physical and cultural aspects of Oregon. Traveling with a group of geographically minded people also aided in seeing Oregon from many different perspectives.

Oregon in Your Eyes: Every place is shaped by people and vice versa. Never have I seen this more distinctly than during my time in Oregon. The relationship between Oregon and the people who live their truly caught my attention. Many places you go, the utilitarian view of the natural environment is prevalent. But, in Oregon, the people seemed to truly grasp the treasure around them from the ocean coastline, to mountain ranges, to lush valleys, to deserts, to areas made bare by volcanic activity. This relationship with the environment pervades the way many Oregonians live their lives including from the foods they eat to their transportation, recreational, and consumer choices. Oregonians seem to have allowed their captivating natural environment to influence them producing respect, accountability, and a sense of wonder.
How this course influenced you as a Geographer: Only by observing the interaction between people and their environment can you begin to truly implement the training you receive in the classroom. This type of interaction draws out your natural curiosity, and armed with geographical understanding, you can begin to ask appropriate questions about these spatial relationships. This course allowed me the space to ask geographical questions and seek out the answers on the ground. It helped me gain confidence about my ability to apply the geographic perspective to research and use the knowledge I have gained in college to think critically. Being able to draw from my peers, their perspectives, and research goals helped keep the wheels turning in my own mind. It allowed me to add depth and breadth to my own questions and research enhancing my spatial analysis. I also gained respect for the process of planning research.

Oregon in Your Eyes: A brilliant example of humans consciously working with their environment.
How this course influenced you as a Geographer: This experience shed light on the delicate confluence of science and art. Geography has been a mysterious subject in my life, until we were given the opportunity to see the working process of creating some of the most cartographically sound maps ever made. This opportunity bridged the gap between representations of the earth and the earth itself. The entire experience transfers in that respect--everything we are working toward in this field has to be in harmony with the environment.

Oregon in Your Eyes: There are many differences in Oregon, whether it is on the coast in Astoria, the arid desert in Bend, the valley in Eugene or the urban city of Portland, but Oregonians have a common spirit that ties them all together to form one cohesive state.
How this course influenced you as a geographer: Being given the opportunity to learn first hand was an amazing experience. I was able to make connections in real-time from place to place and also was challenged to think critically. The passion every person we met with about what they do cannot be conveyed through a textbook. Being able to ask questions and actively learn from so many knowledgeable people and environments was indispensable.

Oregon in Your Eyes: Oregon has it all! From the beautiful sand beaches to the snow covered mountains you can experience so many different land forms and landscapes in this state. And not only is the landscape amazing but so are the people. They are extremely friendly and open and genuinely believe that all things local are the best.
How this course influenced you as a geographer: This trip was so packed with experiences designed for us to learn about the land and culture. On top of everything that I learned I found that I really enjoy cultural geography and that field work is required for it. I thought it would be difficult for me to gather data for my project but it was much easier and enjoyable than I had anticipated.
